Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul

May 3rd 1995  was the 50-year anniversary celebration of the great victory of the Soviet people over Nazi Germany. In Prokhorovka  church bells were rung in the village, bringing the good news of the opening of a new spiritual shrine-The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.  Both residents and visitors witnessed the Cathedral being  consecrated by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II.

In July 12, 1943, the Battle of Prokhorovka, decided the outcome of the Battle of Kursk. In memory of the dead the grateful descendants erected the Memorial Cathedral, the walls are covered with marble slabs with names of those who passed into eternity.

According to the canons of the Orthodox Church if events in honor of the Cathedral  coincide with the day of a Saint or other church holiday, the Cathedral is called, respectively, the names of these Saints or the holidays. July 12 – day of Saints Peter and Paul. The Cathedral is named after their names, and constructed after an ancient Russian tradition    by donations. Five thousand donors, including individuals, businesses, public organizations, banks, joint-stock companies donated to the cause. Helping hands reached out to Russians living abroad. In addition to monetary support, many businesses and organizations, including «Uralmash» JSC, Kaluga turbine works», «Hermes», «Urengoi Gas, gave materials and help with construction.



The Trustees began the coordination of fundraising and construction of the Cathedral on November 23, 1993, under the chairmanship of Nikolai Ryzhkov.


The historical and religious complex, built in 1993 includes the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, St. Nicholas Church, the House of Veterans of war and labor, House of the clergy, the mortgage stone, a Bell of togetherness of three Slavic Nations.

The Bell of Unity was built in the year 2000 to mark the anniversary of the birth of Christ, for the visits of the Presidents of the three Slavic Nations: Russia-Vladimir Putin, Ukraine Leonid. Kuchma, Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. The three columns of the Rotunda depict Saints, representing these States: Sergius of Radonezh, St.Vladimir and Saint Princess Evfrosinja of Polatsk. At the Bell, the words were written by St. Sergius of Radonezh: "Love and unity we shall be saved."


The Cathedral is intended to not only focus the memory about the historical past of our nation,  but also  a symbol of the great victory in the fight for freedom and independence of the Motherland.


The managers of the project of the Temple of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul were Dmitry Sergeevich Sokolov (Chief Architect), Evgenii Nikolaevich Popov (Chief Engineer), Sergei Belov (Chief Designer). The Cathedral monument is a circular structure. It is crowned with three chapters, merging with the Bell Tower . A complicated arrangement with a vertical-axis it is attractive with its integrity and perfection of form. The Cathedral is covered with the domed vault,  at the base of the arched windows overlooking the gallery. The total height is 59 metres. The white Cathedral gives a sense of greatness, eternity and harmony. In the interior are marble plaques with the names of eight thousand soldiers killed during the Battle of Prokhorovka.


The Catherdal is located in the village of Prokhorovka. From a distance it resembles a candle as a tribute to the exploits of heroes.
